Tobacco Prevention and Control
Grassroots advocacy/organizing and community-based initiatives in diverse communities
CMCH has implemented a number of community-based initiatives to prevent and control tobacco use in diverse communities in Seattle-King County. Initiatives range from organizing home parties to support African American and Cambodian mothers and young families in eliminating/reducing tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke, promoting cessation in worksites using a module based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Pathways to Freedom
guide, conducting smoke-free events in
bars and nightclubs, and training health
ministry members and other interested
faith community members to deliver a
brief tobacco cessation intervention. In
addition, CMCH is a member of the
Washington State Department of Health’s
Cross Cultural Work Group on Tobacco
and of Communities Against Tobacco, a
coalition of community-based
organizations that work in partnership
with diverse communities on tobacco
prevention and control issues in
Washington State.
